Cost: My rate is USD2.5 per square inch.
Timing: 3-15 months. I rarely need more than a few weeks on the painting stage. The exact timeline will depend on your location and whether the work must be fully cured and varnished before packing and shipping. Other factors include the complexity of the composition, availability for reference collection, and administration.
Overview of the Commissions Process
- Inquiry and Discussion: We communicate over email, phone, Zoom, or in person to confirm the details, including subject, size, and timeline.
- Proposal & Pricing: I will give you a proposal for the project that includes pricing and a payment schedule.
- Contract & Deposit: A non-refundable initial 50% fee is taken at this stage to confirm the commission.
- Reference Collection: You supply me with reference materials (usually several photographs), or we arrange a live sitting in which I make sketches and take photographs.
- Composition Approval: I show you some sketches that will give you an idea of what the final painting will look like.
- Creation & Curing: Oil paint can be dry to the touch in approximately two weeks, but requires 6-12 months to cure fully. If we live close enough, you can hang the painting in your home while it cures, and then I can revisit the work to complete the varnishing stage after the paint is fully cured.
